Corson Surname DNA Project Newsletter –
April 2006
Hello everyone,
In the past
month, two participants received their test results, and one participant signed
up. This has been another
red-letter month for the project, with the two most recent results allowing us
to (1) estimate the ancestral genetic signature for another Division and (2)
confirm the ancestry of two participants to two Divisions.

DIVISIONS WITH NEWS
DIVISION I (New England) –
5 participants and results
The Colson participant (#25)
who believes that he descends from Samuel Colson (1719-1810) (Div. I-D),
grandson of progenitor Cornelius Cursonwhit (c.1660-c.1710), received his
results. His genetic signature
matched the Division I ancestral genetic signature on all 43 markers tested,
confirming that he almost certainly descended from Cornelius Cursonwhit.
Thus, we now know that we’re looking in the right direction for
documentation to connect the participant’s earliest known Colson ancestor,
John B. Colson (c.1802-aft.1870), to Samuel Colson.
DIVISION II (Sussex Co., NJ)
– 4 participants, 3 results
A Corson participant (#27)
who documents descent from Benjamin Corson (1827-1901) recently joined.
Many researchers consider that Benjamin’s father was Abraham Corson
(c.1779-1851), a Division II descendant, but some believe that Benjamin may have
descended from a Division III (Staten Island, NY) Corson.
Consequently, the results of this test may confirm whether Benjamin
Corson descended from Division II or Division III.
DIVISION IV (Cape May Co.,
NJ) – 4 participants and results
The Corson participant (#26)
who documents descent from John Corson (c.1660-1728) via his great-grandson Joel
Corson (d. 1823) received his results. His
genetic signature matched that of two other documented descendants of progenitor
Carsten Jansen (1634-c.1697) on 41-42 of 43 markers tested, allowing us to
estimate the ancestral genetic signature of Carsten Jansen himself.
Now that we know the ancestral genetic signature of Division IV Corsons,
we can search for genetic matches in Europe that might indicate Carsten’s
region of origin. We also have been
able to confirm that the earliest known male-line ancestor of Participant #6,
William Corson, Sr. (bef. 1775-aft. 1823), indeed descended from Division IV.
DIVISION Va (Dumfriesshire,
Scotland) – 1 participant and result
The Corson participant (#23)
who documents descent from William Corson (c.1735-1802), of Scotland, received
his results. His genetic signature
doesn’t match that of any other participant in the project, indicating that
Scottish Corsons may not be genealogically related to any of the other known
Corson families. We’re looking
for another Scottish Corson descendant so we can estimate the ancestral genetic
signature for this family.

DIVISIONS WITH NO NEWS
DIVISION III (Staten Island,
NY) – 6 participants and results – We are still looking for participants
from the following lines: male-line descendants of (1) Hendrick Vroom’s
(1683-1769) brothers Cornelius (b. 1677) or Alfred, and (2) Benjamin Corssen's
brothers Jacob (1681-1742) or Christian (1676-aft. 1764). We’re also looking for other descendants of William
DeCoursey (bef. 1720-1788) to participate.
Until then, we won’t know if the Corson, Vroom, or DeCoursey genetic
signature (if any of them) represents that carried by progenitor Cors Pieterszen
(1612-1655).
DIVISION VII (Hunterdon Co.,
NJ) – 2 participants and results – Now that have the ancestral genetic
signature of progenitor Jacob Corson (c.1755-bef.1822), we’re looking for
genetic matches that could indicate where Jacob’s male-line ancestors came
from. Other participants from this
Division are welcome.
DIVISION VIII (Colsons not
derived from Corsons) – 1 participant and result – The current participant
descends from Adam Cols(t)on of Massachusetts, born ca. 1660.
We welcome participation by those descended from him or other Colson
progenitors.
DIVISIONS VI, IX, and XIII
– no participants – We still wish to recruit descendants of Daniel Corson
(1763-1849), who moved from Sussex County, NJ to Ontario, Canada.
We're also searching for participants with ancestors from European Corson
/ Corsan / Courson / Curzon / Korson families.
UNCONNECTED – 4
participants and results – Three Corson participants and one Courson
participant remain unconnected to other participants in the project.
SUBSIDY FUND
